God's Pharmacy

Our adult son called me last week to say he thought he had strep throat and was wondering if I remembered the name of a natural product we had used years ago to get rid of his sister's strep throat.
I told him the name of the product and
gave him a few other things to try as well!

Here is the texting that went on after the initial phone call:
(This was from Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, January 18-20)

Today's Workout

Do you need a workout idea?
Today I worked on my shoulders with 4 different exercises using my 15# dumbbells.
I warmed up with front, back and side kicks and jumping jacks.
I did 3 sets of 12 repetitions with 10 jumping jacks between reps and then 25 jumping jacks between the different exercises.
-Overhead shoulder press-12 reps, then 10 jumping jacks; repeat 2 more times, then 25 jumping jacks
-Side raises (arms hanging at sides with palm facing in, raise to shoulder height and lower to sides)-12 reps, then 10 jumping jacks; repeat 2 more times, then 25 jumping jacks
-Front lateral raise (dumbbells in each hand in front of thighs palms facing in, raise arms alternately up to shoulders in front of you)-12 reps, then 10 jumping jacks; repeat 2 more times, then 25 jumping jacks
-Overhead shoulder raise (arms shoulder height out to sides palms facing up, raise arms simultaneously up overhead)-12 reps, then 10 jumping jacks; repeat 2 more times, then 25 jumping jacks.
I struggled with some of these exercises with my 15# weights so do what you can starting with a weight that is comfortable for you-0, 5 or 10# and and repeat this workout on the same day next week if you want to get stronger shoulders. My plan is to do a different body part or combination of body parts each week day, Monday through Friday.
Please work at a pace that is comfortable for you!
If you have never worked out with weights, try this workout without any weight and work up to adding dumbbells!
It is very important to not do too much too soon but I don't think it's a good idea to not do anything.
Start light and build up your strength.
We need it to run this race that is set before us-I believe we need patience, too, but a strong, healthy body may make it easier!

I then was able to add a 45 minute session of cardio:
5 minutes on the rebounder (mini-trampoline)
5 minutes running my basement stairs
5 minutes jumping rope
REPEAT whole sequence 3 times!

Cool down and stretch out your body!

I know, I had a lot of time to work out today!
It's not always that way. but you can break the cardio down to 15 or 30 minutes if you wanted to give it a try or do strength training one day and cardio the next.
If you don't have a rebounder, just use the jump rope and stairs or pick something else that you can do for 5 minutes-maybe kick boxing moves, crazy dance moves, high knees or stepping or running in place.

Put on some music and work up a sweat!
Take a well deserved hot shower and enjoy the day with more energy!

Drink lots of water and enjoy a healthy day of eating-scrambled eggs or egg whites, carmelized onions, leftover peas all fried up in skillet with a little coconut oil for breakfast, grilled chicken breast with sauteed veggies, a dash or two or three, of hot sauce and maybe a little or BIG side salad for lunch! And a yummy dinner!

Have a healthy, happy day!

"..Let us run with patience the race that is set before us," Hebrews 12:1

"I can do all things through Christ which srengtheneth me." Philippians 4:13

"Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth." 3 John 1:2

Sweet and Spicy

That's it!
My pants were starting to feel tight-straining at the buttons!
Too many sweets over the holiday season!
And in a large family-immediate, extended and church family-
there are a LOT of occasions to have sweets!
I was putting my foot down!
Or to be more precise, my dessert fork!
I refuse to use age, hormones or any other excuse as a reason to buy bigger clothes!
I need to take charge of the situation!

Time to pull out the SECRET WEAPONS!
First of all, in my last post I mentioned that I am seeing a functional medicine doctor who ordered blood tests, etc.~That has been wonderful for leveling out crazy hormones, pointing out food sensitivities, allergens, etc.
It doesn't, however, magically get my pants from being too tight so out come the
SECRET WEAPONS!

SECRET WEAPON #1:
Morning protein shake that keeps me full for hours! I am NEVER hungry until lunch!
My favorite recipe:
*1 cup coffee (opt.)
*1 cup coconut milk
* 1/2 cup water (or more if not using coffee)
* 1-2 teaspoons ground flaxseed
*1 serving protein powder-I use  vanilla Vega Protein and Greens (Costco sells it!)
* 1 teaspoon of xylitol (opt.)
* 1 heaping teaspoon of 100% pure cocoa (opt.)
*ice (opt.)
I put it all in a shaker cup and shake it up good!
I LOVE IT and look forward to it every day!
I will also drink it without the coffee and cocoa for an evening snack if I feel like a need something.
It really is a treat!
No need for sugary, fatty desserts!

SECRET WEAPON #2: (Super easy!-Gotta try it!)
Sweet and Spicy tea from Good Earth!  http://www.goodearth.com/
It comes in decaffeinated herbal or herbal with black tea.
It's a wonderful substitution for dessert as there is cinnamon, orange, peppermint, ginger, lemongrass, chamomile in the ingredient list.
I take it with me wherever I go and drink some in the evening if I do not want to have a sugary dessert!
It completely takes any cravings away!
Love it!
The ladies at the church coffee table have been trying it and loving it!
I always have an extra teabag for you if you ever want to give it a try!
I gave some to my dear friend, Sarah,  for her birthday and she said
it SAVED her life!
Ha Ha! I chuckled at that!
Never underestimate the power of a teabag, I guess!
Celestial Seasonings also has a very similar tea that I love: Cinnamon Apple Spice

SECRET WEAPON #3:
Drink a lot of water!

SECRET WEAPON #4:
Refuse to eat fake food!

SECRET WEAPON #5:
Move a little extra every day! You know, as in EXERCISE!
Even if it's 5 minutes!

These are the secret weapons that I am currently using and sure enough my clothes are starting to fit better!
And doesn't that make life more fun!
Sometimes we just have to pull out a few weapons and charge forward!
Try one or try all and see if any of them work for you!

So there you have it!
And I know a few of you were wondering if this was going to be a 'spicy' Valentine's post!
But, no!
Maybe another day!

My Super Simple Health & Fitness Plan

I am trying to not be so preoccupied with health and fitness.
I do not want it to take precedent over more important things like spending time on building relationships, especially with God and those He gave us to love.
I still think it is so important, though, to try to keep our bodies as a temple, feeding it good, God-given food, drinking pure water and keeping it in good shape so we can enjoy the life God gave us and to perhaps even be a helper in His plans.

So, here is my plan:
1) I get up early so I can 'hem' my day in prayer and read a little scripture (this is the number one thing that has helped me with my day!) while sipping on warm lemon water.  This takes anywhere from 15 minutes to 45 minutes depending on how early I get up. (I unload the dishwasher while my water heats up.)
2) I then put on my tennis shoes and start the laundry and immediately start exercising while the laundry is going.
I workout anywhere from 20-45 minutes depending on how much time I have. I do not stress about it at all. Whatever works is good enough but I never NOT do it. I exercise every day, but I make it easy by doing it early in the morning right in my own home in between household activities, which is usually when it is still dark outside, before kids get up.
Here is my workout schedule:
Monday, Wednesday, Friday:
Total body workout-alternating strength moves with cardio
My current workout, though you can make up your own, alternating strength with cardio.
Jump rope 100-200 rotations
push-ups
jump rope 100 rotations
assisted pull ups
jump rope 100 rotations
bicep curls
run stairs 5 flights
triceps dips
jump rope 100 rotations
kettle bell swings
REPEAT 2-3 times depending on how much time I have.
End with 200 jump rope rotations, cool down, stretch
You could just do jumping jacks alternating between push-ups, squats and tricep dips.
SO SIMPLE! NO EXCUSES!

Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday:
cardio and abs or glutes
5 minutes jumping rope
5 minutes running stairs
alternating for 20-30 minutes
5-10 minutes abs or glutes exercises
cool down and stretch
Again, SO SIMPLE but very effective!

Sunday: 15 minutes of yoga and maybe a leisure walk with hubby. Nothing serious.

3) I drink a protein shake with ground flaxseed added mixed with water after every workout. I use All-natural Body Logix protein powder 'decadent chocolate' found at Meijer.

4)  Shower time: I dry skin brush before every shower using a natural bristle skin brush found at health stores, using long firm strokes starting from feet and brushing upwards towards the heart.
I take a shower using baking soda water (1 tablespoon per cup of water pre-mixed in a water bottle) for my face, body and hair; rinse, and then I use apple cider vinegar water (1/4 cup per 1 cup of water pre-mixed in water bottle) for hair conditioner and face toner; rinse.
I keep a large bag of baking soda and 1 gallon apple cider vinegar under my bathroom sink for refills.
Honestly, my skin and hair is SO soft!
And, really, it is just so simple, and cheap, too!
I towel dry and use coconut oil on my face, neck and entire body.
Now I'm glowing! Yes, I keep a jar of coconut oil under my sink!
Teenage daughters and hubby are saying how great my skin looks and it is super cheap and no yucky ingredients!
Super simple!

5) After my shower, I get to dress in something other than workout clothes now that my early morning exercise and shower is done!
Yay! I was tired of always being in workout clothes!
It's done for the day and now I can enjoy my other tasks without worrying about it!
Plus, I feel great and perfectly ready now to start the rest of my day with that out of the way!

6) I focus on drinking at least 3 quarts of water each day and getting veggies in at every meal.
Breakfast is usually 2 whole eggs with sautéed onions and some other veggie. Love it! I sprinkle a little Braggs liquid aminos on my eggs which is a lighter version of soy sauce!
I am currently eating a large veggie salad every day for lunch with homemade olive oil and apple cider vinegar dressing and protein-chicken, salmon, hardboiled eggs. Sometimes I add nuts and seeds and olives.
For dinner, I usually have some kind of meat, venison, chicken, salmon with vegetables and a salad with healthy fats like olives and homemade dressing.
I keep almonds in my purse in case I need a snack when I am out, sometimes dark chocolate is added!
I eat fresh veggies for snacks, also; cucumbers, radishes, broccoli.
I limit my dairy, fruit, grains, starchy carbs and sugar, though I do not cut them out completely.
I just feel so much more energetic when I limit these foods. Usually I limit them to 2 servings total per day.
I do eat dessert here and there but try to just have a taste instead of a whole piece if I feel I have eaten way too much of the limited foods during the week. Otherwise, I do eat the whole piece!
If things have gotten out of hand with the eating, (which they do), I cut out all limited foods for a few days.
This is KEY to keeping me in my skinny jeans, plus, I feel so much better and energetic!

7) I try to get outside for fresh air and sunshine every day and get to bed at a decent hour.

I hope this schedule of mine encourages you to have your own little schedule no matter where life finds you.

"Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth." 3 John 2

"Peace I Leave With You"

Our worries of the day make it hard for us to sleep sometimes.
Proper rest is said to be one of the most important things we can do for our health and well being.

Here are a few ideas for peaceful sleep!
1) Go to bed early!
Put the kids to bed and start on your own bedtime ritual! Stop all chores, start a bathing ritual, settle into bed, read a little, count the days blessings, say your prayers and turn out the lights!
2) Create a morning routine: 'hem' your day in prayer, sip something warm, count your blessings, take a few deep breaths and plan your day.
3) Take mini breaks throughout the day to just breathe deeply-inhale slow, exhale slow-all the way to the belly and back!
4) Increase your exercise.  Make sure your physical activity is as great as, or greater than, your mental activity.
5) Get plenty of fresh air and sunlight.
6) Eat food the way God made it.
7) Sip on herbal teas.
8) Take a short nap.
9) Keep your sleeping room dark and quiet.  Eliminate all blue and red lights from electronic devices.  Keep your room as dark as possible.
10) Buy a good mattress!
11) Practice yoga~google relaxing yoga poses.
12) Don't eat anything crazy before bed!
13) Live in peace.
14) Let go and let God!

"A day hemmed in prayer rarely unravels." ~a saying on Grandma Storm's wall.

"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.  Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." ~ John 14:7

"I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety." ~ Psalms 4:8

God's Peace to all!
Love,
Laura

Wellness Mama

I just wanted to share one of my favorite health sites that I stumbled across in my search for how grains can impact our dental health and found out grains have a huge impact on overall health.
It's been a very interesting learning experience for me and I have been slowly implementing a lot of what I learn to our everyday life.
The site is full of great homemade natural household & beauty recipes and wonderful recipes and menus for grain-free, sugar-free, nutrient-dense meals.
It's Wellness Mama and you can check it out at the link below.
I think you will enjoy it, too!

Health Tip of the Week!

Health tip of the WEEK (of the MONTH, of the YEAR!):
CUT OUT THE SUGAR!
Sugar is slowly killing us!
It is destroying our immune systems causing disease that sneaks up on us when we least expect it!
It is zapping our energy and making us fat and lethargic!
It interferes with brain function, hormones, sleep patterns, mood, etc, which will in turn interfere with how we will react to stressful situations (and we all know that stress is a killer!)
It affects our relationships and how we interact with eachother!
We are at great risk of losing our health and vitality, our viv and our verve, our joy and our happiness, OUR LIVES, when we feed our bodies this poison!
And the precious children! Oh, how they suffer the consequences of the poison in our food!
There are chemicals in our water supply, chemicals in the food, toxins in the air, etc, etc.
And there is sugar!
Disrupting the body's ability to function properly on top of all of these other assaults taking place!
It reacts as a poison in the body!
It would do a body good to stay away from it all together!

Oh, great!
I am about sure, Laura!
Give me a break!
There is no way to stay away from sugar! It's everywhere! What do you want me to do? Be one of those mom's that don't let her kid eat anything fun!
Don't be ridiculous, Laura!

So, is this what you're thinking?
Probably.
A good way to start eliminating sugar is to not have it at home.
Don't buy it at all!
Stop baking with sugar.
Stop buying the packaged junk!
Leave the pop and juice jugs at the store!
Forget about buying the little sugar-loaded cups of yogurt, puddings, jell-o, candy, cereal!!
Now can you start seeing where it is sneaking into our lives everyday?
It is in almost everything! (And another killer is fast food! It's loaded with sugar and chemicals & slowly destroys all bodily functions!)
So Just stop buying it! (Believe me, you and the kids will be much happier without it! Just wait and see!)

What we do is have no sugar Monday through Friday.
No brownies, no cookies, no ice cream, no juice, no fruit-flovored yogurt, no package cereal, etc.
Not even bakery made with raw organic sugar, sugar cane natural (Sucanat), or any processed sugar.
We will make dessert when friends or company come over on the weekends that may have sugar in them but I will always cut the sugar in half (or more-and I will NEVER bring white sugar into the house at all!) or use a natural sugar substitute like fruit, honey, or stevia.
I made a pumpkin cake for my friend's birthday that had a bit of honey in the cake and crushed pineapple with butter, cream cheese and milk in the frosting! It was very moist and delicious!
Maybe I will post the recipe soon!
Honey has a lot of nutrients and is favored over sugar but can still cause the body harm if overconsumed. It should be treated as a treat, not an everyday indulgent.
I love our local Michigan raw honey that I get from the Country Life co-op www.clnf.org.
There is nothing like it! It's wonderful!
I use it to make granola or granola bars and a teeny bit in my tea on the weekends and for a special dessert.
We will use a bit of honey in homemade chocolate milk for the children when they come in from the snow and cold and even a bit in plain yogurt but we try to keep it to a minimum.
Since we do not have sugar at home, we don't mind if we or the children have it away from home, if it is offered, and on special occasions! The problem lies in the fact that sugar is consumed in huge amounts on a daily basis. Every day is NOT a special occasion!

I encourage you to look up any information regarding the affects of sugar on the body and any recipes for natural, sugar-free food. (Please, NO FAKE SUGAR! It is even more of a poison than processed sugar! Any food that is man-made & processed is not food!) You know what I'm talking about~if we cannot pronounce the ingredients, we shouldn't be eating it!

Here are a few ideas for sugar-free snacks!

No-sugar snacks & food ideas:
1) Fresh fruit
2) Apples or bananas with peanut or almond butter
3) Popcorn
4) Hardboiled eggs
5) Plain yogurt with berries, mashed bananas, etc
6) Cheese sticks
7) Veggies~plain or with hummus, artichoke dip, avocado dip, etc.
8) Celery with peanut or almond butter and raisins
9) Raw nuts & seeds (with dried fruit & dark chocolate chips on occasion)
10) Mini crustless quiche cups made in muffin tins

Poisoned At the Dentist's Office-Jacob's Story Part 4

Jacob's unusual neurological symptoms were caused by mercury poisoning.
The 50% mercury in the amalgam fillings sent his body over the edge.
I cried my eyes out when I researched amalgam fillings!
They are 50% MERCURY! A KNOWN NEUROTOXIN!
AN INCH AWAY FROM THE BRAIN!!!!!
Oh, why did I ever let the dentist put that poison into my child's body?
I KNEW better! My guard was down!
ABSOLUTELY NEVER AGAIN!

Some of you may say, "Look at all of us people in the world that have had silver fillings in their mouths for ages and nothing went wrong with us!"
Well, Jacob may be the first person you have ever heard of, but he is my and God's precious, precious child! No child should EVER be subject to poison. Let alone, ON PURPOSE!
Yes, the dentists all know that mercury is poison!
Jacob's medical bills came to over $40,000!
And that doesn't even count the thousands we spent AT THE DENTIST!
WE PAID THE DENTIST TO POISON OUR PRECIOUS CHILD!!!!!!
DOES THAT MAKE SENSE TO YOU??!!

Oh yeah, I WILL lobby for mercury-free dentistry!
I will TELL ANY AND EVERYONE who will listen!
Amalgam fillings are 50% MERCURY!!!
Look into MERCURY!
AND AMALGAM! http://www.iaomt.org/news/archive.asp?view=all

Please, let us do all we can to PROTECT our precious Treasure! ~Our Children!

Wouldn't you know, God led us to help again!
We found Dr. Regiani! A holistic dentist that is the founder of IAOMT (International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology). http://www.regianidental.com/
He replaced Jacob's fillings with a composite that we had tested by Dr. Parker, our chiropractor, to make sure it was compatible with Jacob's physiology.
Eventhough Jacob was doing 95% better by the time we had the fillings replaced, we knew we needed to get that mercury out of his mouth!
We held our breath!
He has not had ONE episode since then!

It's been a year now and Jacob still sees Dr. Parker (chiropractor- http://www.spartanchiro.com/ ) every 2 weeks. He continues to take his supplements 4 times a day. He gets an ionized footbath (at the chiropractor's office) that draws out toxins from his body. He has been doing these footbaths once or twice a month for almost a year now, too.
He is our happy boy again!
It is a MIRACLE right before our eyes!
We are so thankful!!
God provides!

One more thing that has been crucial to Jacob's recovery is that Dr. Parker also applied Neuro Emotional Technique (N.E.T.) to Jacob's visits. Something emotional was blocking the ability of Jacob's body to heal properly eventhough he had come along quite nicely with the supplements and footbaths.

Everything that God led us to do were crucial for Jacob to heal properly.
I told God that I would tell this story so that perhaps one other child may be helped.
So that's the story!
God bless the little children!

Jacob's Story Part 3

Oh, wow! It's been awhile!
Here is part 3 to Jacob's story.

~I continued to pray for help and guidance. We didn't know what to do.
I thought maybe we should bring him to the chiropractor we were seeing many years ago. Dr. Green is a comprehensive chiropractor that deals with applied kinesiology as well as nutritional counseling.
I called his office.
No answer. Just an answering machine.
I called another chiropractor that does similiar treatments.
No answer. Another machine.
Called the following day when they were supposed to be in the office.
No answer, again!
I went to the computer and searched on the internet for chiropractors that used applied kinesiology, knowing that Jacob's situation required something more than just spinal adjustments.
I found one! And the website said they love kids!
I remember feeling as if my heart was beating harder than usual.
I wanted so badly to find something that would help Jacob!
I just knew something was going on inside his body and that somehow he could get help!
I just didn't know exactly how it would happen.

So, here I was, writing down the phone number to Spartan Family Chiropractic http://www.spartanchiro.com/ and secretly hoping we could find an open door.
It happened to be a Friday morning and I didn't want to waste the day searching and not try to at least get a call into somewhere. Anywhere!
I felt desperate!
I called and Darcy answered. I gave her a brief rundown and then I spoke with one of the chiropractors.
A little more thorough rundown this time.
Yes, indeed, Jacob's case was quite unusual.
I was able to get an appointment that very evening!
At 5:30. I was so excited!

Jacob and I arrived and the very first thing Dr. Parker said, was: "I can tell something is going on by the dark circles under his eyes."
I couldn't believe it!
All he did was glance at him and he knew right away that something was wrong!
(Hippocrates wrote about looking first at the body to see what could be wrong with the patient. I learned that from my 20 year old son who wants to be a chiropractor.)
Dr. Parker then gave Jacob a spinal adjustment and asked if he had any dental work done lately.
Wow!
I was just starting to wonder if Jacob's recent fillings had anything to do with his unusual symptoms.
Dr. Parker then muscle tested Jacob for 2-1/2 hours trying to find out what his body was trying so hard to say!
His body was testing very high for mercury and his brain and liver areas tested weak.
Wow! We found this out in a few hours? I was thoroughly amazed!
I believed in it! My gut instinct told me that this all made sense! (Gut instinct really means God's gentle whisper, don't you think?)
I asked Dr. Parker if he thought there was hope for Jacob.
He said, yes, he believes there is hope!
Thank you, God! We seem to be getting somewhere!
That night was the first night in 10 straight days that Jacob did not have an episode!
I believe the spinal adjustment was very helpful as it is directly related to the central nervous system.
Thank you, Dr. Parker!
Thank you, again, God!

This isn't the end. Jacob still had episodes daily.
Dr. Parker gave him natural whole food supplements to help his brain and his liver.
After a few weeks, we thought it seemed Jacob's symptoms might be a teeny, tiny bit milder.
Were we just hoping?
Some people doubted the whole chiropractic route. But, we believed.
There were no side effects to this treatment. His body desperately needed healing.
We continued to hope and believe that he would get better!
Jacob saw Dr. Parker every week, testing and re-testing to make sure his body got the nutrients he needed.
He was slowly improving.

Next, I'll write about 2 very important things that brought Jacob's health to a speedy recovery! But, I won't wait so long this time.

Jacob's Story-Part 2

September 16, 2010
We rushed Jacob to the nearest emergency room, they gave him a CAT SCAN and sent him to the University of Michigan-Mott's Children's Hospital via ambulance while I was saying my prayers that Jacob would be okay!
He was admitted to the Pediatric-Neurology department and given every test you can imagine: MRI/MRA, CTA, EEG, ECHO, EKG. The tests all came back normal.
The doctor that read the MRI saw a shadow on his brain and thought perhaps it could be a clot or tumor. That turned out to be false.
Then they noticed that his right carotid artery was quite curvy and maybe blood had gotten caught up in it and caused a minor stroke. They couldn't tell for sure since the tests came back normal, but for lack of anything else, they concluded that it may have been a cause of his strange symptoms.
They prescribed baby aspirin for possible cardiovascular causes.
His symptoms soon disappeared and he appeared quite normal, except for his gait. He was still walking funny, as if his legs were stiff and couldn't quite remember how to move correctly.
He was discharged on September 18, 2010 with a follow-up appointment in 4-6 weeks.
So, we gave him his baby aspirin every day. We had to cancel a dental appointment because they didn't want to work on his teeth while he was taking the aspirin. Jacob was in the middle of restorative dental work.
We wondered what was really wrong with him. Did he have a mini stroke? Would the aspirin prevent it from happening again?
It didn't.
All his symptoms came back on September 21, 2010. Same thing. Rush to emergency room, ambulance ride to UM. All the tests plus a spinal tap and a psychiatric evaluation. Everything normal.
Jacob was a mystery! I asked the doctors about Lyme disease, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, allergies. No, they said. None of those.
It could be complicated migraines, they said.
Really? I looked it up on the internet and sure enough, Jacob had many symptoms of an unusual type of migraine. The speech and walking thing but what about the weakness and the wierd throaty sound?
He was sent home with a prescription for a daily migraine medicine and physical therapy to help him regain his normal gait.
What will the medicine do? Fix his brain? Get rid of whatever it is that causes these strange symptoms? We will have to wait and see. And are migraines supposed to happen every single day?
Jacob got worse. He would have an episode every single day. Anywhere from 1 minute to lasting all day. Sometimes his head would hurt. Other times, he would just fall down and lay on the driveway or wherever he would be and appear to be passed out. His legs would give out on him, he started talking like a baby, he would get restless and jump around like an animal. He would be scared and think the "man" on the computer screen was going to "get" him. He would tell his dad that 'he's mean'. He would growl and throw things. He would cry for 15 minutes at a time. He sometimes seemed spacey and would stare at his hands. He would moan and roll around on the floor. He would scream and bang on the car window with his fists and struggle with the seatbelt until I was worried he would choke himself. Everything was so completely out of character for Jacob.
We would put essential oils on his head, rub his back, and take him for car rides to calm and soothe him. Lenny would end up carrying him to bed when these episodes would end and he would be limp like a rag doll and then sleep all night. At times, we wondered if he was still breathing. He seemed so still. I cried myself to sleep many nights!
The medicine seemed to make him even worse. He started hallucinating and acting like he was choking. It scared us! We took him off of it after starting and stopping a few times with the same choking, hallucinating results! Something was going on inside his body and we didn't believe the medicine was going to help him at all! We wondered if our son would ever be normal again!
Now what do we do? Our poor, little Jacob was hurting and no one was able to help him!
We were on our own!
I cried. And prayed. Dear God, show us how to help Jacob. We don't have a clue what to do!

Jacob's Story~Part 1

I need to tell the story about how our 9 year suffered unusual neurological symptoms just 'out of the blue' last September.
On September 1, 2010, my husband, Len, was on the way home from the hospital that I was admitted to due to a little blip in my pregnancy, when he recieved a call from our then 11 year old. It was 1:30 in the morning and Philip was calling to say that Jacob was crying because he had a horrible headache (the teenagers were all sleeping). When Lenny got home, he assessed the situation and decided he needed to bring Jacob to the emergency room. They gave him a CAT scan and an MRI, but couldn't find anything so they figured it was a sinus/ear infection. They gave him medicine and sent him home. We gave him his medicine for a few days and he seemed fine.
Two weeks later, Jacob started acting strange. He came into our bedroom around 9:30 at night and said that he knocked into some furniture and bumped his head and I remember saying to him that maybe we should get his eyes checked. He appeared to be fine~no bumps or anything. He walked out of the room and a few minutes later, one of the younger kids came to our door to say that Jacob was acting funny~breaking pencils and a ruler. I went to investigate. I remember asking him what he was doing and to stop breaking things. I thought maybe he was mad about something. Without saying anything, he started to go downstairs. I followed him. He sat down at the kitchen table and I went into the other room to do something. Lenny had decided to go to the store to get coffee for the morning. I can't remember who it was, but someone came to tell me that Jacob was breathing funny. I rushed into the kitchen and sure enough, Jacob was making this throaty, gurgling sound. It looked like he was about to have a seizure.
"Jacob, are you okay?", I asked.
He didn't say anything, but continued to make that strange sound.
I said, "Jacob, you're scaring me. Can you hear me? Can you breathe?"
He must have shook his head to say 'yes', because I remember feeling a tiny bit relieved.
I brought him into the living room and found that his legs gave out on him. I sat him on the couch. I told him that everything will be okay and that I will take care of him. He was somewhat stiff when I told him to lay down. He couldn't seem to relax his body.
He asked me if he was going to die. I reassured him that he wasn't, but boy, my heart just broke a little.
Then he started babbling, not making any sense at all.
I panicked!
I screamed for someone to call Dad!
"Hurry! Tell him it's an emergency!"
I was crying and screaming!
Jacob was breathing funny, couldn't walk and babbling~all the while wondering if he was going to die.
Something was terribly wrong with my little boy!

Jack LaLanne's Guide To Reducing Stress

Jack LaLanne, a health and fitness icon, passed away in January at the age of 96.
Just last year he wrote a book called "Live Young Forever" just to continue his love of encouraging people to get into and stay in great health!

We bought the book.

Here was a man in his 90's that was the picture of health from the time he learned about health and proper nutrition when he was 15 years old until his death at 96.

It is never too late to learn all you can to live a happy, healthy, fulfilled life!

Here are his tips for reducing stress, which is a major factor in illness.
These tips are from his book "Live Young Forever"

~Be prepared for the unexpected.
~Don't take a job of which you know little, are careless about, or that you find extremely difficult.
~ Don't expect constant approval at work or in the home. It seldom materializes.
~Work out at least three days a week: weights, stretching, walking, treadmill, yoga, Pilates.
~Prioritize your "to-do list" and follow through in order of importance.
~Eat clean: Natural, wholesome foods. Plenty of fruit and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein.
~Don't worry about the future; plan your future. Set achievable goals, and follow through.
~Do everything that is healthy for your mind and body. No junk food, drugs, or cigarettes, and very limited alcohol.
~Delegate some of your workload to others; you cannot do everything.
~Learn to completely relax at different times of the day. Put your feet up and watch a half-hour TV comedy program or read a good book.

I love these tips. Read and think about everyone of them and see if you can incorporate a few at a time!
Check out the Jack LaLanne website for motivation and encouragement:

Green Smoothie Girl

We are trying to incorporate more raw foods into our food plan.
A friend told me about Green Smoothie Girl.
She advocates whole foods, trying to eat at least 60% raw foods & drinking a green smoothie every day to get wonderful, very much needed nutrition, live enzymes, etc, for a strong, healthy body!

A recent blog of hers listed the 4 things she does every day, no matter what, in terms of feeding her family.

They are:
1. Drink raw kefir for breakfast.
~Kefir is a wonderful pro-biotic, yogurt-type drink that is best to make with raw, unpasteurized milk.
Now, you might be thinking, raw milk? Isn't that bad for you? We will surely die from it!
Do a little research.
Check out the info.
Of course, you can start out with a pasteurized, organic milk.
~Kefir is made with a starter. I currently do not have a starter, so I am in the process of looking for one. You can get a powdered type from the health food store. I do not have any experience with that kind yet, but I just may try it.
~The best starter is getting a bit from someone who is currently making their own kefir.
~Anyway, look into it.

2. Make a green smoothie every day.
Green Smoothie Girl has recipes and one that she suggests is:
spinach, kale, peaches, mixed berries and banana.
Fill up a blender, blend and serve 2 cups to children and 4 cups for adults.

3. Put a raw fruit and a raw veggie in children's lunches.

4. Always serve a fresh, raw salad at dinnertime.

So, this is what we are trying to do at our house. I still need to find my kefir starter, but the rest is fairly easy. We just need to get into the habit of making the smoothies.
I leave my blender out now to make it easier.

Check out www.greensmoothiegirl.com for all info.
It is quite interesting and it is always nice to find ways to improve our health and the health of our loved ones.
God gave us a job to do here on earth and it's nice when we have the energy and good health to do it!

Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

Gluten-Free Recipes

We are trying to cut down on gluten in our home.
Our daughter, Chloe, has hypoglycemia.
Every once in a while she would get dizzy along with an overall funny feeling.
I brought her in to get a saliva and urine test and that is when we found out she had hypoglycemia.
It was recommended that she eat a gluten-free diet as much as possible.
We have made very small changes and she hasn't had an episode in quite some time.
Many people can be allergic to gluten without even realizing it.

Here are some symptoms of gluten intolerance:
~weight loss
~weight gain
~nutritional deficiencies
~gastro-intestinal problems
~poor digestion
~aching joints
~depression
~eczema
~headaches
~exhaustion
~irratibility and behavioral changes
~infertility
~cramps
~tingling and numbness
~slow infant and child growth
~decline in dental health

We are going to try to incorporate more gluten-free meals for our family.
I know we could do without having any of the above symptoms!
Anyway, I found this really wonderful site for gluten-free recipes.
Complete with menus and beautiful photos!
Please check it out if you are at all interested or curious!
http://glutenfreegoddess.blogspot.com/

I DO want to encourage all of you to never be afraid to be the person God created you to be!
You have a lot to offer others with your gifts!
We could all use a little help here, you know, and your specific gift can help so many!
Take the time to ask God to reveal what your gifts are and do NOT be afraid to use them!
You may not even feel you have anything to give.
But YOU DO!
All you have to do is
BE YOURSELF!
God knew what He was doing when He created you.
I just want to say~
~Thank you for just being YOU!

Homemade Hummus

We love homemade hummus at our house!

~With fresh veggies,

~tortilla chips,

~on a salad,

~with warm pita bread

~or on a sandwich!

My sis-in-law gave me this recipe years ago:

2 cups garbanzo beans (chick-peas). I use dried beans, soaked overnight, drained and then cooked until soft with fresh water, but you can use canned, too.

~Joni suggests adding kombu seaweed to the cooking water for a ton of extra nutrients!

~save a little bit of water for blending, if needed, for smoothness, etc.

1 teaspoon sea salt

Juice of 1 fresh lemon

2/3 cup tahini (sesame seed butter). I buy sesame seeds and use them whole with a little water instead of the tahini. My blender blends them up real good. Tahini is easiest but it can be quite exspensive. And anyway, tahini is nothing but sesame seed ground up into a butter!

1 teaspoon sliced green onions.

~You could add any vegetable you want, roasted red peppers etc.

1-5 garlic cloves.

1 Tablespoon-1/2 cup fresh olive oil

Water, as needed.

Put all ingredients in blender and blend, adding a little oil at a time.

~Add water as needed.

This is an easy recipe for a child to make!
You will never want to buy store-bought again!
I hope you LOVE it!

Just A Few Things

Just a few things I would love to share with all of you:

The Eat Clean Diet Newsletter has 4 tips to get your dream body: http://www.eatcleandiet.com/
1. Eat Clean!
~This is THE biggest factor! We could exercise until we are blue in the face, but if we choose to reinforce our bodies with worthless junk, the dream body just ain't gonna happen!
~Ditch the processed foods, white flour, white sugar, junk etc.
~Focus on whole foods.
~Read the ingredient list and stay away from anything you can't seem to figure out what it is.

2. Schedule a time, perhaps 2 times a week, for meal planning and preparation.
~It takes some effort but so worth it.
~Pack a cooler for the car
~No more running through the drive-thru when your hungry or picking up pizza for dinner when all your meals are planned and prepared to start your meals off right!
~Grill up a big batch of chicken breast or cook whole chickens and make a big batch of brown rice for tossing with veggies, spices, etc or putting in soup.
~Chop and store fresh veggies and herbs for grilling, stir-frys, salads, soups etc.

3. Get Active.
~Expect yourself to set up a time for evercise at least 4 times a week. Expect is a key word here!

4. Don't feel guilty!
~Just try for consistency, not perfection.
~ I always like to say: "We'll be perfect in Heaven!"
~It's just not going to happen here!

Okay, so that's that! You can find tons more inspiration at http://www.eatcleandiet.com/

NEXT!

I also received a newsletter from Precious Health Campaign.
~Anyone at all interested in what is in vaccines, the latest legislature on vaccines or anything else you may be wondering about vaccines, please visit http://www.childhoodshots.com/ and just browse around on the site.
~I happened to watch Mary Tocco's dvd "Are Vaccines Safe?" a few years ago and found it to be quite helpful in helping me clarify a few things about vaccines.
~I even sent an email with a question I had to the website and I received a response right away.
~They really just want everyone to get more informed about what options we have as parents of our very precious children.
~It is definitely something to look into.

One more thing that I just have to say:

~Of course, it is just my opinion, but if anyone out there that is residing in the beautiful state of Michigan and is ready for a new Governor, I highly recommend you check out Pete Hoekstra's web page at http://www.hoekstraforgovernor.com/.

~He is 100% pro-life, fights for the rights of parents etc.
~The primaries are this coming Tuesday, August 3, and I urge everyone who loves life to vote!

Thanks for reading and I hope you found something that inspires you!

"Jesus, Tender Shepherd" and the Best Earache Remedy

The other night our almost 4 year old woke up in the middle of the night with an earache.

I bet it was from swimming every day during the hot weather that we had.

My old stand-by remedy is to crush a clove of garlic and then mix it with a tiny bit of water to create somewhat of a paste.

I dab the garlic paste onto the outside of her ear with a cotton swab.

I do not go into the ear canal, but I do dab it onto the earlobe.

Then I warm a rice-filled sock or just a plain dry cloth and hold it onto her ear.

I usually put a drop of peppermint oil on the sock or cloth, but our teenage daughter was using it for cramps and she wasn't at home at the time.

So this time I just used a warm cloth.

Then I gave her reflexology on the bottom top half of her foot (the side that the earache was on)~the toes and the area just underneath the toes.

I use firm pressure with my fingers and thumb.

Of course, this little child came into our bed and I asked her if she wanted me to sing her a song.

She did.

She chose "Jesus, Tender Shepherd" which is a bedtime song that my grandparents sung to me and all of my cousins.

All of us cousins still love that song to this day and we fondly connect to each other whenever it is brought up.

It is a favorite with all of our children, too!

Our little 'earache child' went to sleep shortly after and she slept the rest of the night!
Here are the words to our favorite bedtime song, which is actually a prayer but we have always known it with a little tune.

"Jesus, Tender Shepherd"

Jesus, Tender Shepherd, hear me;
Bless thy little lamb tonight;
Through the darkness be Thou near me,
Keep me safe till morning light.

All this day thy hand has led me,
And I thank thee for thy care;
Thou has warmed me, clothed and fed me;
Listen to my evening prayer!

Let my sins be all forgiven;
Bless the friends I love so well:
Take us all at last to heaven,
Happy there with thee to dwell.

If by chance you happen to see one of us 'Storm' relatives and you want to know the tune, we would be delighted to share it with you!

May God bless your days and your nights!

PS. Don't you just adore the painting? I found it on http://www.allposters.com/ and the original was painted by Bartholome Esteban Murillo.

The title is called, "Christ Child as Shepherd"

I am putting it on my list of favorites.

Natural Homemade Sunsreen

I don't think it makes sense to load up my family's skin with chemicals just to protect it from something God so lovingly provided~
~the sun!

So I go to the health store and buy Aubrey Organics Natural Sun lotion made with herbs and green tea.
It's exspensive but well worth it.

I might make my own sunscreen this year, though, with one of these recipes:

Recipe #1:
Buy zinc oxide ointment in the diaper rash section of your favorite store and mix it with your favorite natural lotion.
My friend, Melissa, makes wonderful natural lotion that I just love and use for my reflexology business. She has a beautiful etsy shop @ www.ElegantRoseBoutique.etsy.com.

Recipe #2:
3 T grated beeswax
3 T shea butter
1 T avocado oil
1 T coconut oil
1 T sesame oil
1 T olive, almond, jajoba or sunflower oil
3 T aloe vera gel
3 T lavendar hydrosol
1/2 t. borax powder (laundry section)
1 vitamin E gel caplet

~Melt in double boiler: beeswax, shea butter, avocado oil, coconut oil, sesame oil and olive, almond, jajoba or sunflower oil. Do not boil. Remove from heat.
~Add vitamin E caplet to oil/butter mixture.
~Warm aloe vera gel, lavendar hydrosol and borax in separate pan until well blended.
~Mix aloe vera mixture with butter/oil mixture and whisk until creamy.
~Store in airtight jar and refirigerate.
~Will last up to 1 month.
~You can add 5-6 drops of grapefruit seed extract (natural preservative) to mixture and it will last up to a year.

Recipe #3:

1. On low, heat 1 cup olive or almond oil.

2. Add 1 oz. crumbled beeswax to heated oil until wax melts completely.

3. Remove from heat and immediately add 2 T zinc oxide. Mix thorougly.

4. Pour into sealable container and store in refrigerator. Shake container if oils separate.

Eating deep green, red and yellow fresh produce also protects the skin and provides tons of antioxidants, so remember to get those in if you want to be healthy in the sun!

And you know what they say about avoiding too much sun exposure between the hours of 10:00-2:00. I think we should just be wise about it and wear a hat, etc.

The sun is a GOOD friend, not a bad one, but I think we should use a little caution.

I am sure all of you had a grandparent that you remember wearing hats and long sleeves in the summertime.

They weren't laying around baking in the sun.

Well, maybe some of you might have to think way back to the great-grandparents!

Anyway, give these recipes a try or check out Aubrey Organics products.

My Super-Easy June Wokout

My exercise classes are done for the summer!

I need a plan to keep me going!

So this is what I am doing for June:

1. Tea time in the morning. Quiet time to calm AND energize me before my day starts (see Tea Time (15 Minutes In the Morning) post)

2. Walk/run. Check out previous post on walking for a few different ideas.

3. 15 minutes of weight training. I absolutely love Joyce Vedral's books and the one I am using now is "Definition" which is a 15 minute workout 6 times a week or 30 minute workout 3 times a week.

Working out with weights is so important for muscle strength, energy, endurance, bone density and re-shaping the body.

4. Yoga and stretching and deep breathing. Even if I just get 15 minutes in, I'm happy!

My plan is to do this workout 5-6 days a week. I try to go rollerblading on Saturday mornings instead of walking and I keep my Tea time and yoga/stretching/breathing for every day!

Working out first thing in the morning works best for me as the day just keeps coming up with all kinds of reasons why I should be doing something else.

Of course, I need to have a plan B and even a plan C on occasion.

Just pick your best time and stick with it for the rest of the month.

So, put your plan down on your calendar, whatever you decide, and enjoy your health, energy and altogether better outlook on life as you get your mind, body and spirit in tip top shape!

I am also going to focus on eating a huge array of colorful, fresh veggies and fruits and drinking my water (12+ glasses per day).

It really is a simple plan-

~Quiet time

~walk/run

~weights

~yoga/breathe

~water

~colorful produce=

Happy mamma, happy family, happy life, happy anyone who comes across her path!
